Maninder Singh Kalkat graduated in 1989, and attained MCh in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Chandigarh in India. He continued further training in the West Midlands Cardiothoracic Surgical Training Programme in UK. He was appointed Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham in 2006. He is Clinical Director of the regional department of Thoracic Surgery and works as a lung transplant surgeon at University Hospital Birmingham.

His field of expertise includes minimally invasive thoracic surgery involving lungs and mediastinum. His special interests include management central airway obstructions and resection/reconstruction of the chest wall for soft tissue and bony tumours.

He has strived to ensure that the department provides safe, cost effective and quality service to the patients. This has been possible by creating an environment where every member of the team is appreciated and supported for the job they perform.

He is organizer and faculty member of various National and International courses. He is examiner for the Intercollegiate Speciality examination in Cardiothoracic Surgery for the Royal College of Surgeons and European Board of Cardiothoracic Surgery
